Disney’s new Snow White has apologised after admonishing Donald Trump voters following his landslide win over Kamala Harris.
Responding to the election result, the 23-year-old actress wrote: “I find myself speechless in the midst of this. May Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself never know peace.”
She added that Ms Harris should not have lost and said there is a “deep sickness in America”.
Amid reports of panic at the studio, Zegler apologised.
“I would like to sincerely apologise for the election post I shared on Instagram last week.
“I let my emotions get the best of me. Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse,” the actress said on Thursday night.
She went on to say that she believes everyone has a right to their opinion “even when it differs from my own”. “I am committed to contributing positively towards a better tomorrow.”
Her original post provoked backlash from Trump supporters who called for a boycott of the live-action remake.
“Rachel Zegler is very beautiful, potentially talented, but her statements are delusional and out of control. I can’t imagine studios considering her anymore,” one X user, Dr Attila Schnapka, wrote.
“She’s become toxic.”
Another rejoiced in the crisis ignited by Zegler before rounding on the film itself.
“Disney keeps losing money with these woke remakes of their beloved classics. I’m glad they are in panic,” wrote Foxy Farmer.
Another wrote: “Not taking my kids to see this trash after the statement you put out. Disney you need to do something about this.”
The remake of the 1937 classic has also been mired in controversy with David Hand, whose father David worked with Walt Disney, saying the pair would be “turning in their grave” over the remake.
Mr Hand accused studio bosses of destroying the classic with innovations such as replacing the seven dwarves with “magical creatures”.
“I’m afraid of what they’re going to do with the early films… their thoughts are just so radical now.
“They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that.”
Zegler took aim at the prince in the original story, describing his behaviour as that of a stalker.
She also claimed that Snow White was not named because of the colour of her skin, but because of her resilience.
In 2022 the Disney studio was accused of going woke after Karey Burke, the corporate president, promised to make films more inclusive.
“We have many, many, many LGBTQIA [lesbian, bisexual transgender, queer, intersex and asexual] characters in our stories and yet we don’t have enough leads and narratives in which gay characters just get to be characters and not have to be about gay stories,” Ms Burke, the mother of one transgender and one pansexual child, said on a leaked video.
The studio also attacked a law signed by Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor and former Republican presidential candidate, banning the discussion of sexual orientation in primary schools.
