Description
Vintage New Old Stock from the mid 1960's to mid 1970's by D.P. Ehrlich Boston Ma. Meerschaum Cutty, smoking pipe from a collection owned by a dear old friend of 45 years. May have been fondled over the years occasionally by my friend the original owner, but he put it away and never used it.As I heard for years thru the '70's and '80s my buddy would tell me the story of how he had commissioned the carver at Ehrlich to make many pipes for him thru the mid 60's to the mid 70,s (as I understood) and was saddened greatly when that carver passed away suddenly...my friend was devastated and took to smoking other brands at that time.
I do believe that Ehrlich was his favorite brand and it was a short drive to Boston to commission and pick up...and hang out and have a smoke for a while, which he did quite often.
The only reason I say "Near Mint" is because it shows a very slight brownish age spot to the top middle of the shank...tried to photo, but it's very hard to see in photo's and it's not bad, but there.
Marked "14K" on the gold band.
Total length....7-3/4"
Chamber Diam....1"
Chamber Depth....approx. 1-13/16 with no filter.
Weight....1.4 ozs.
The original velvety lined storage case is in absolute mint condition and the clasp works perfectly and closes tightly. This pipe was found stored in a well-to-do, humidity controlled smoking home in the case sitting in a box with other used and unused Ehrlich pipes, all with exceptional custom fit cases.
The stem screws into the shank with, what looks like white nylon(not the usual solid brass) machine thread, unscrews easily and rests in tightened position perfectly lined up with the bowl.
Don't know what the "12" means inside the bowl.
I am not an expert enough to know if the stem is real amber or not, but it sure looks it.
Feel free to ask questions if I left anything out. I will be listing a lot of pipes this coming Fall thru winter for the widow of my collector friend. May He Rest In Peace.
