    Description

    The tunicle was traditionally the vestment worn by the sub-deacon, and formerly used in High Mass services of the Roman Catholic Church- with the one bar horizontal in the design, the deacon' garment (dalmatic) usually having two.
    This is a particularly beautiful tunicle composed of cloth of gold in glittering metallic threads in a repeating cross in circle pattern. The orphreys are contoured red velvet panels 3” wide, with wide sleeves sewn together underneath in two places for better fit. The entire vestment is finished in three color piping and it is lined in medium red fine silk.
    The tunicle measures 43“ long from top center back neckline, 58“ across the top from one sleeve end to the other, with neck opening 11 ½” diameter. The sleeves are 12“ long measured from the underarm, and their openings are 14“ wide, slightly flared at the bottom to approx. 43“ wide.
    Probably circa 1930s-50s in age, and French made, although there are no indications on the vestment as to exact place of origin. This was donated from a Canadian parish to a religious community in my area, proceeds from the sale going to support their missions.
    It is graded in Very Good to Fine condition- used but quite gently, a slight bit of wear noted on interior lining around the neck portion only, an unusual an collectible vintage liturgical vestment.
