Nude Woman WDC Carved Meerschaum Pipe w/ Case & Tobacco Tin Late 1800's Estate
This WDC (William Demuth Company) Genuine Meerschaum Pipe was probably my Great Grandfather's. It was left in an old Prince Albert Tobacco Tin, on the top shelf above the cabinets in an old summer kitchen on our 150 Indiana farm. It sat there sealed inside the tin from probably around the 1940's or earlier until mid-October 2020, when I was doing some cleaning and was surprised to find it inside the tin.
After identifying the pipe as a Genuine Meerschaum, I took it to my local Meerschaum Pipe dealer. They think this has a good chance of being from the late 1800's (19th Century). WDC was founded in 1862, so we know its made after that date. Probably in the 1890's. Let me know if you can help pinpoint the date of this pipe (or even the tin).
We have not been able to definitively identify the name of the pipe design (the girl with her arms above her head), but have found a few examples that come close. Almost certainly, it was hand carved and each pipe made could be slightly different. The design is described in many different ways like: Nude Figural, Erotic Woman, Lady. Although while many of the examples look very similar, there details are much more refined and pronounced with cutaways between the lady and the pipe body, which causes me to think my more primitive version is a much earlier version of the design.
I'm not sure if this is important to note, but my Great Grandfather was a sales rep for a few different companies. One company he repped was in the tobacco products business (not sure of the company). He sold to drug stores in the north and south east USA. He would also help them market their products by providing and setting up things like window displays and "Cigar Store Indians". I have a collection of pictures he would take after helping them better merchandise and display their products. It is very possible that he obtained this pipe in the course of that business.
If any expert collectors out there can help us more clearly identify the year, design name, country of manufacture, or anything else about the pipe. please let me know.
