Description

This large carved Meerschaum pipe is early and antique, including the original case. It is loaded with character and patina. It depicts a gentleman and his lady ice skating. He, with his top hat is utilizing his cane to help lift the woman who's fallen. She's trying desperately to manage her skirts and bloomers though her calves are showing in what would have been risque for the era the pipe was made.
The pipe measures 6" left to right; 5" top to bottom; and 2.6" front to back. The briar long-stem measures an elegant 18". The tones and patinas for the pipe are incredibly difficult to capture. The 1st photo in the line-up most accurately depicts the actual colors, though not quite. The tones range in color from a darker white; caramel; light to dark orange; and brown. Though the camera tried to insert 'yellow' tones, there are none.
The pipe stem appears to be horn as does the connector between the stem and mesh. The briar has been old-whittled to fit the pipe. There is an old repair on the horn between the stem and mesh (pictured). There are a couple of hairline fissures on the pipe area where the stem attaches (pictured). The pipe is solid in every respect. The lady's skate came loose from it's original pin, but I reattached with a dab of super glue and it is intact.
