I think this 5 star review from Tom Horn sums this knife up very well :)
Well, I’ve done it once, again. Gone and blown my budget for the month (probably, the first quarter of the year). But, some things in life are worth having, and this is one of them. The V44 says, “Bowie,” like no other knife. The V44 captures the heart and soul of the Bowie knife’s original intent. Forged in hell, baptized by blood, and battle proven on the volcanic, jungle atolls of Tulagi, Guadalcanal, and Bougainville, by one of America’s finest fighting forces, Carlson’s Raiders (2nd Marine Raiders Battalion), the V44 Bowie is an American icon.
The Bark River V44 Bowie is an excellent interpretation of the V44 style. The massive blade measures 2.375” from spine to belly at the apex. The knife is well balanced, and agile for such a large blade. The long grind seems a good compromise between cutting mechanics, and chopping strength, with a strong point and nice swedging. I went with the stacked leather grip to keep it more authentic to WWII era materials. I don’t believe any Marine Raiders had a stacked leather handle on his, “Gung Ho Knife,” at that time (unless he brought his hunting knife from home, which many did), but, I’m sure Micarta was not used in knife handles, as yet. The stacked leather handle is slippery, so I would go with the Micarta if you plan on using this knife. I like the hefty brass double ‘S’ guard, staying with tradition. But, if you’re a strict practitioner of Filipino grip, or just want more versatility of grip, Bark River has a single guard (lower guard) version of their V44, and you may want to wait for those to arrive at KnifeCenter.com. It could add some collector’s value down the road. Arrived sharp, and fit & finish to all surfaces is flawless, as you have come to expect from Bark River. Outstanding!
The Bark River V44 Bowie is a must have for any collector of Bowie knives. It is as, American as, apple pie, a Colt 1911, and a Springfield M1 Garand. It is, as capable of any pursuit, as any frontier Bowie knife ever was. I doubt I will ever use it, but will have it on-hand, in case I ever receive an invitation to the sandbar ; ) It’d be downright un-American not to have this iconic American Legend represented in your collection. If the wife finds out you bought it, just tell her you were doing your patriotic duty. Besides, take it from me, the Bark River V44 Bowie is great knife to have out in the dog house, with ya : )
