The German translation of MEERSCHAUM is “sea-foam”, as it was once believed that meerschaum was made of compressed whitecaps of waves. Meerschaum, of course, is a porous mineral composed of tiny sea creatures’ fossilized shells that fell to the ocean floor millions of years ago. The highest quality meerschaum is found in deposits only in one place in the world — Eskisehir — in central Turkey.
