ANTIQUE Large MEERSHAUM "1861" CARVED "SETTLER" Long Stem Pipe w Brass Fittings.
This large carved bowl pipe with hinged brass spark guard has a 26 inch stem with what looks like carved horn mouthpiece. The main carving is of an early "settler" with an axe with a house in the background, and the year "1861". The initials JH are stamped on the brass top piece. The pipe is solid but the hinged top piece has a few dents as can be seen in photo's, but does not affect the use. There is a chain and wound string attachment, I assume to keep the two pieces together, although with a slight twist the stem stays tight to the bowl. This has seen use over the years and is as found from an old NH home near the CT. River area.
