This medal is from my mother’s estate collection. Bertha who passed away in 2010 at age 97, (The founder of Church-Woman Antiques).
Her inventory notes mention the following. In the late 17th century, the Bishop of Mexico authorized a Catholic devotional medal of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A limited number of those medals were minted in Rome and used as gifts for wealthy Catholic patrons. That medal helped the bishop (Francisco de Aguiar y Seijas) fund the building of the new Basilica from 1682-1708. This is one of those medals. Similar medals can be found in the Franciscan Museum in Rome. A copy of that medal collection is posted for reference.
